Cranbrook Country Park approved after plans for 590 more homes submitted
A country park within a new town on the edge of Exeter has been officially given the go-ahead today.
East Devon District Council (EDDC) announced it has granted planning approval for the first stage of the Cranbrook Country Park, with developers intending to start work within the next few weeks.
The open space is intended to provide wetland habitat and native grasslands in order to advance the ecology in the area as well, as offering public open space for the new community to use.
Developers recently submitted a planning application for 590 additional homes at Cranbrook, which would increase the number of proposed homes in the town from 2,900 houses to 3,490.

East Devon Green Party has objected to the proposal, saying that developers should contribute towards a new cycle and pedestrian bridge across the railway.
Spokesman Henry Gent, said: “We must have a pedestrian bridge across the railway before there is any more increase in the house numbers allowed at Cranbrook. This is important, because the extra people at Cranbrook need to access the countryside, yet damage to the countryside must be minimised.”
Developers say they are striving to promote the establishment and long term maintenance of the landscape in creating the country park.
A spokesman for EDDC said: “There are a number of green spaces and areas for recreation and leisure either planned or currently being created and about 350 homes are currently occupied.”
Despite previous claims the new town could increase flooding risks in the area, the Environment Agency said it had “no objections in principle” to the proposal from the flood risk aspect.
The Cranbrook Community Forum raised a number of concerns over the proposal that it said would serve as a “negative blue print” for future development of the town.
A spokesman said: “The design is far too dense and parking and green space provision woefully inadequate. We would like to see the parking provision increased and would also like to see more incidental green space or pocket parks to soften the scheme and provide younger children with areas to play in closer to their homes.”
Developers recently objected to the new Morrisons supermarkets on the edge of the city, saying it would have an adverse effect on trade in the new town centre.
The much-anticipated new link road connecting the Science Park, Skypark and Cranbrook with the city opened earlier this month.
The town is eventually expected to have a total of 6,550 homes by 2026, subject to planning approval.
It is expected that a minimum of two in five (40%) of the proposed residential development will be affordable homes.
