An Exeter-based band that gained the admiration of John Peel and toured with Snow Patrol and Goldfrapp are releasing a three-CD compilation of their work.

Appliance have put together an epic 44-track collection of BBC Peel Sessions, B-sides and early EPs – their first release since 2003’s Are You Earthed? album.

Entitled Re-conditioned, it is being released through the independent label RROOPP, which specialises in high-quality compilations for independent bands.

Appliance was formed in the mid-1990s by Exeter friends James Brooks, David Ireland and Michael Parker. They released three EPs between 1997 and 1998 on various independent labels and signed to Mute Records in 1998.

Their debut album, Manual, came out in 1999 and featured the singles Food Music and Pacifica. In 2000 the band released Six Modular Pieces, followed by Imperial Metric in 2001 and Are You Earthed? in 2003.

Their music was played regularly by John Peel on his BBC Radio 1 show and they toured with Wire, Snow Patrol and Goldfrapp.

Re-conditioned brings together many of Appliance’s best moments in one package, including the four Peel Sessions, previously unheard demos, and the band’s critically acclaimed three EPs, two of which are available on CD for the first time.

The album also highlights Appliance’s interest in experimentation and repetition, combined with a desire to produce melodic songs.

David said: “This is a major accomplishment for us to bring together some creative moments that many Appliance fans won’t be aware of.

“CD3, for example, could easily have become our debut LP, so it is great for us to finally see the trilogy come together.”

James added: “We never thought we would get to release the four BBC Peel Sessions.

“Not many bands would have enough material to fill a CD and it is a real pleasure to release these special recordings.”

However, there is no need to take the band’s word for it, because Appliance had no shortage of fans during its seven-year history.

NME said their albums offered “a thrilling listening experience”, Rocksound considered them “one of the most precious of bands”, Mojo believed they “merit more acclaim than they’ve received so far”, The Times described their sound as “fresh, innovative and exciting”, while Record Collector suggested its readers would “probably fall in love with this record”.

Re-conditioned by Appliance is released by RROOPP at £12.99. For further details or to order a copy, visit www.rroopp.com.
