Customer service is key for train operator
WITH the deadline for entries in the 2013 Express & Echo Business Awards approaching faster than a speeding train, First Great Western is encouraging local employers to celebrate staff who go the extra mile.
The train operator is supporting the awards for the second year running, this time by sponsoring the Excellence in Customer Service award.
David Crome, the company's general manager for the West region, said: "First Great Western recognises the importance of supporting the communities we serve and the value of transport links to local economies.
"We run 9,079 services every week, calling at 276 stations. Our trains cover a total of 70 million miles and carry 90 million passengers every year, providing high-speed commuter, regional and branch line train and sleeper services across the Greater Western rail franchise area.

"This includes Devon, with direct services to stations en route to London, Bristol, Cardiff and connections, the Cotswolds and into Cornwall.
"In Devon we are also delighted to support and work with the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership and the Avocet Line Rail User Group to add value and expertise to projects designed to improve services and make stations safer, friendlier and greener."
There are 12 categories in this year's Express & Echo Business Awards and companies in Exeter and the Heart of Devon have until Thursday, March 14, to submit their entries.
At last year's gala ceremony, Mr Crome presented the Corporate Social Responsibility award to Bruce Henderson, of Exeter City FC.
Explaining why First Great Western was keen to sponsor the Excellence in Customer Service category this time around, he said: "Every day our helpful and friendly staff help to transport thousands of people to their workplaces, to important meetings, to visit friends and relatives or simply to enjoy a day out. We recognise the key role good customer service can play in that journey.
"This is why we are proud to sponsor the highly regarded Excellence in Customer Service Award. We would like to take the opportunity to congratulate all of those nominated for an award and to wish them good luck as overall winners are decided."
As well as helping to celebrate local business success stories, First Great Western is part of the consortium of private and public sector partners behind the Invest in Exeter marketing campaign currently taking place on the London Underground.
Other sponsors of the 2013 Express & Echo Business Awards, run in partnership with Eclipse Internet, include ATASS Respect, Exeter College, Business Solutions, Fidelius Insurance Services, Ivor Doble, Kitsons Solicitors and Pavey Group.
