Police have used DNA evidence to identify a man who was found dead on an Exmouth beach.

The discovery of Clifford John Thorne on the shoreline of Cockles Sands last July had puzzled detectives and prompted a series of public appeals.

The 67-year-old, from Oxford, has now been identified by a DNA sample and by his family, who last saw him in January when he went out to buy a newspaper.

Officers are now attempting to trace missing belongings, including a watch with a gold-coloured face in the shape of an eagle and a key fob bearing a Welsh dragon.
