THOUSANDS of festive residents and visitors got in the spirit of Christmas when they took part in the ever popular Candlelit Dartmouth procession.

The picturesque Elizabethan town was decked in wonderful Christmas lights for the two-night extravaganza.

And on Saturday night, old and young alike walked through the town and along the waterfront with hundreds of handmade paper lanterns.

Now in its sixth year, the volunteer-run event saw Dartmouth filled with music, festive markets and street entertainment.

The weekend's highlights included Father Christmas arriving by boat complete with naval escort on the opening night.

Organiser Steve Thomas said: "It was brilliant. The weather was what we wanted. Cold and crisp which encouraged people to have some mulled wine.

"It was much better than last year. And people like Dartmouth Academy have been wonderful with their support."
