THE deadline for letters backing Plymouth's airport campaign has been pushed back by a week.

By yesterday 220 letters and 35 emails had landed on the desk of council leader Tudor Evans. Cllr Evans launched the letter-writing campaign at a council debate last month.

The debate was triggered by a save-the-airport petition organised by campaigners from the group Viable, who gathered almost 38,000 signatures.

Cllr Evans called for residents to write to David Cameron, the Prime Minister, urging him to intervene to protect the airport at Roborough.

The Herald also urged readers to put pen to paper to help protect the airport site.

Cllr Evans has sent his own letter to Mr Cameron but has not yet had a reply.

Campaigner Maddi Bridgeman, who helped to organise the petition and addressed the council meeting, said yesterday that she hoped more people would support the letter campaign.

"For someone to actually sit down and write a letter takes a lot of thought and work," she said.

She accused the council of passing the buck by relying on people to write to the Prime Minister.
