John Lewis has said that innovative touch-screen technologies in its Exeter store will be a first of a kind for the city, as well as retail outlets across the partnership. The Exeter store, which is set to open on Friday next week, will house a Samsung SUR40 table in its electrical department.

It will allow customers to view multiple Samsung products at one time, on one screen to compare their key features. Customers will then be able to save the product information to their smartphones, via a QR code.

The table's built-in object recognition function means that it will also be able to recognise particular products, such as laptops, when they are placed on its surface.

Matt Leeser, head of Buying, communication technology at John Lewis said: "We hope it will be a fun experience for customers; allowing them to try out a completely new way of shopping and create a sense of in-store theatre."

In another first for John Lewis, specially designed interactive information screens will take customers through a number of questions to help find the best product to match their needs. Eight tablet-sized information points will be based in several departments and focus on products that often require research before purchasing.
