Plymouth Herald

IN 2011 I spent many weeks in Derriford Hospital and since being discharged more than a year ago have been attending my GP surgery on a regular basis.

During my hospital time I had very frequent blood tests, even daily for some of the time, and since then I have been having my blood tested about monthly through my GP surgery.

I understand that all the blood samples taken from patients in Derriford and other hospitals in the area, from the 56 GP surgeries in Plymouth and a number in West Devon and East Cornwall, are processed by the haematology department in Derriford, so they must be dealing with many hundreds of samples every day.

Yet when I give a blood sample at my local surgery one morning the results are available to the surgery and other interested health practitioners the next morning.

I have been impressed by the speed and efficiency of this vital service which goes on unsung behind the scenes. Derriford Hospital, and indeed the NHS in general, so often gets a bad press and the public should know about this excellent but, I imagine, largely unknown aspect of its work.
