Devon officer takes the helm at Dartmouth's BRNC naval college

A Royal Navy officer from Devon, who has been promoted from the ranks, is now in charge of the day-to-day running of Britannia Royal Naval College.

Lieutenant Commander Steve Henaghen joined the Royal Navy in 1977 and served in every rank as a non-commissioned officer before being promoted to the officer corps in 2001.

Now he has been appointed the first lieutenant at the naval college in Dartmouth, where he undertook his own initial officer training.

Lt Cdr Henaghen spent the first 22 years of his career as a gunnery specialist serving on board various ships, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates and mine-hunters.

He saw active service during operations in the Gulf and had the honour of being the last live-firing close range officer at HMS Cambridge, the former Royal Naval Gunnery School at Wembury.

"I look back with pride and a sense of accomplishment over the last 35 years," he said. "I have travelled to places I never thought I would visit, accomplished personal and professional challenges I never thought possible and owe a lot of these achievements to my naval training and the ethos the service still projects on a daily basis."
