A plan to raise the amount of council tax people pay for policing Devon and Cornwall has been approved.

The Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Panel agreed to raise the policing part of the Council tax precept by 2%. This equates to an increase, on average, of £3.19 per household per year.

Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg said: "We believed that not raising the police part of the council tax during the next financial year would have a major impact on policing in Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. It would have meant that officer numbers may have fallen to well below 3,000."

"We are working hard to maintain officer numbers at their current levels and there was a real need for the Force to increase funds to be able do this."

“It seems to me that most in government or on the side lines lie throught there teeth to get or indeed keep there job.
If they promise this and that and they don't deliver then we should be able to have them brought before a panel of people who would have the power to remove that person.
What worries me is not that 2% has been given and the 25% for the all of workable age it is that this is a tax in place that can be raised in the future”

“If we have fewer polce officers and support staff with their pay being frozen, why do they need more money. The only time we see a police presence in Gunnislake , is if they are lost , or an incident has already occurred.I could understand a two tier system were city dwellers have need of active POLICE OFFICERS, paying more for that priviledge, as they have also better access to the normal so called local ammenities.”
