Two men were seen to approach the car, one covered it in petrol and the second suspect lit an object and threw it at the car, causing it to ignite.

Police are now appealing for anyone who may have seen any suspicious vehicles in the area of Taunton Avenue around the time. And particular they wish to residents to check their bins and gardens for any suspicious items.

The investigating officer DC Jason Bryant said: “The victim is extremely limited in her mobility and is devastated her vehicle has been completely destroyed. Her car was her way of transport and getting out and about, now she is worried she will be confined to her home.

“The Motability company are reluctant to provide another car because of the risk and this car was her lifeline.”

Plymouth police are stepping up high-visibility patrols in the area and the neighbourhood team have been visiting residents with reassurance visits.

The two suspects are described as – a white male of chunky build with a round belly, wearing a dark tracksuit with a baseball cap underneath the hood of the tracksuit. The second suspect is described as a white male, of slim build with a black hood over his head and a matching tracksuit top and bottoms.

Anyone with any information is asked to please call police on 101 quoting crime ref. EL/13/73 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
