A male diver who was airlifted out of Exmouth Marina via air ambulance and flown straight to the Hyperbaric Medical Centre in Plymouth earlier today is expected to make a full recovery.

Staff at the centre told thisisdevon that the diver was currently receiving treatment in a recompression chamber recovering from decompression illness, commonly known as the bends. The condition usually arises if a diver surfaces too quickly, but that seems to not have been the case.

"He was diving near a wreck off Exmouth and seems to have been without any fault in the situation. Some times divers can get decompression sickness even though they ascend to the surface in the timely way they are supposed to," Dr. Sally Simmons from the Hyperbaric Medical Centre said.

The Hyperbaric Medical Centre does research in diving diseases. It focusses on the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the treatment of diving diseases and other medical problems.

“"The flight was handled by Devon Air Ambulance Trust."

So the picture of the Coastguard SAR helicopter is completely superfluous to this story.”
