Monsoon was founded by Peter Simon from a Portobello Road market stall in 1973. Accessorize was launched in 1984 and Monsoon Home followed in 1998. Monsoon was floated on the stock market in 1999, but taken private again by Mr Simon in a £755 million deal in 2007. The business has been looking for a new chief executive since May last year.

Mr Simon said: "John has the skills and experience needed to take Monsoon to the next level."
