Does charity spend wisely?
LET me say from the outset that I have no axe to grind over the Hunting Bill. I can take it or leave it as far as hunting is concerned....mainly leave it.
But I do find it hard to believe that the RSPCA found it reasonable to waste £326,980 on prosecuting one hunt. The animal charity's one aim is to make sure we look after all our pets – and indeed all animals with care and affection – a laudable aim indeed.
But when one of its former employees said the animal charity had to put down 53,000 animals last year because it did not have enough space to house them I can only wonder in disbelief if it has got its priorities right.
It is not the RSPCA's fault this so-called nation of animal lovers abandons and neglects so many pets. But when it wastes so much cash on one prosecution described by the judge as "staggering", I suggest it takes a firm look at its priorities.

Dewy-eyed sentimental Brits hand over millions of pounds to the charity each year – far more than we do to organisations set up to caring for children – in the belief that it saves animals and not slaughters them in huge numbers – even those which are perfectly healthy.
It therefore begs the question: is the RSPCA spending our money wisely. And are we really a nation of animal lovers!

“I suggest that Colin Richey familiarises himself with all the facts of the case before he passes opinion. If he did, I'm sure he would not find it so easy to criticise the RSPCA. Furthermore, what he probably doesn't realize is the Countryside Alliance (a body formed as a hunting lobbying group) has been running a campaign to discredit the RSPCA and ultimately persuade the government to relieve it of its prosecuting power. Today, the ex Chief Executive of the Countryside Alliance secured a debate in Westminster with just that in mind and I'm extremely happy to say, that he failed miserably to convince anyone and instead, made himself to appear exactly what he is - a hunter with an axe to grind and a rather spiteful attempt to smear the reputation of the RSPCA.”

“I think you will find the RSPCA was formed to prevent cruelty to animals ( the clue is in the name ) and large numbers of people and dogs pursuing an animal in order to tear it to pieces is cruelty. If you care to look deeper than the headlines you will find that much time and expense could have been saved if the guilty parties had pleaded guilty at the outset of the trial rather than play a game.”
