Dozens of sofas and armchairs dumped in countryside near Challacombe

Enough sofas to stock a furniture store have been dumped in the countryside in North Devon.

North Devon Council is investigating after around 50 to 100 sofas and armchairs were discovered ditched in a gully near Challacombe.

Photographs taken by one of the council’s staff show the dumped furniture, which is near Breakneck Corner, off the B3358 and a couple of miles east of Challacombe.

It’s thought it would have been at least two lorry loads.

North Devon Council is now looking into where the furniture came from and who owns the land.

Councillor Rodney Cann, Executive Member for Environment, said: "The sheer amount of fly-tipping is appalling. This is a beautiful part of the world, which makes this environmental crime particularly sad.

“We believe the furniture has been dumped by two or three lorry loads, probably by a commercial operator. If anyone knows anything about this horrendous crime, please let us know."

Bill Hucker, Environmental Warden, added: " We're also still trying to find out whose land this has been dumped on. In the meantime, we're hoping someone may recognise their old sofa among the photos we have, which could help us identify those responsible for the fly-tipping."
