Drive ban for man who crashed into wall which crushed pub landlord

A MAN who crashed his car into a pub — crushing the landlord — has been given a community order and 18-month driving ban.

Leigh Brennan, 45, of Downfield Close, Brixham, was charged with failing to provide a specimen following the incident at the Three Elms in Drew Street, Brixham, earlier this year.

Landlord Kevin O'Neill, 53, was crushed under a wall during the incident and suffered serious injuries.

He is back at home but is undergoing physiotherapy and will have to return to Plymouth's Derriford Hospital for further treatment over the next three months.

His partner, Angie Sanders, said she was pleased Brennan had been dealt with.

Brennan appeared before magistrates last month charged with failing to carry out a breath test to which he pleaded guilty.

The court heard how Brennan has a serious alcohol problem.

He appeared for sentencing on Wednesday, April 18. He was given a community order with an alcohol supervision requirement and was banned from driving for 18 months.

Mrs Sanders said: "He's an adult. If he has an alcohol problem then why did he still drive?

"Kevin almost died. He's getting better and he's lucky to be alive but he will never be the same again.

"Forty seconds before Kevin was crushed under the wall, there was a group of young people there. It could easily have been them. It could have been much worse."
