TORPOINT police have warned motorists to stop using their phones when they drive off and on the ferry.

The warning comes after staff at the Torpoint Ferry alerted officers that they had seen an increase in the numbers of drivers driving on to the ferries whilst talking on their mobile phones.

Acting Sergeant Chris Chilcott said: "I appreciate that whilst drivers are sat in the ferry lanes they might make a call or answer their mobile.

"But when they drive off from the ferry lanes towards their ferry then they are still on a road and committing an offence.

“Hands free connection is built into many cars. Cheap kits are also readily available. Why do these dangerous people continue to defy the law?”

“Unfortunately the sanction is far too lenient and also unfortunately the police cannot be bothered or unable to enforce the law or perhaps the police are unaware that it is an offence with potentially lethal consequences.”

“Amazing that these idiots have the nerve to use the phone in full view of others and CCTV. No excuses, book them!”
