A RECENT event at Barnstaple Rugby Club sought to raise awareness of the contribution disabled employees can make to a business.

Hosted by social enterprise Pluss, which helps disabled people into employment, it was also attended by SWM, which won Pluss's Employer of the Year Award North Devon.

Martin Mogford, SWM operations director, said: "SWM has recognised what people with disability have to offer, what they can do and the positive attributes they bring to an employer. We were keen to showcase how successful our partnership with Pluss has been to encourage more local employers to get involved."

Speaker Steve Hawkins, Pluss's head of business development, said: "It was great to see so many local businesses out in North Devon eager to learn about employing a diverse workforce.

"The reality is that people with disabilities can make genuinely excellent employees. Businesses tell us all the time that members of staff recruited through Pluss are driven, determined, perform excellently and, most importantly genuinely want to work."

More than 40 businesses attended the event, including Jason Sharman, managing director of Atlas Packaging.

He said: "Atlas is keen to support local business initiatives and to demonstrate that North Devon businesses can compete successfully on a national scale."

Mr Hawkins said: "I urge more local businesses to come forward and find out how Pluss can support them and answer any questions they have about financial support, free job coaching, no-obligation free trials and worries over costs of adjustments.

"As ever we extend our thanks to SWM for supporting us with their RE:WORK initiative and for being such a great local example of a business gaining from the employment of people with disabilities."
