THE biggest programme of military-themed events for years is to be staged in Plymouth this summer.

Plymouth's Armed Forces Week 2012 will boast dozens of activities in the run to the national Armed Forces Day which is being held in the city for the first time this year.

Photographic exhibitions and talks, concerts, guided water cruises and walks, church services, school visits and open days are just some of the events which make up the week running from Monday June 25 to Sunday July 1.

The event aims to honour the achievements of the armed forces and the contributions made by serving personnel, veterans and families.

It also aims to raise awareness of the agencies and organisations which support the armed forces, such as Seafarers UK.

Seafarers Awareness Week will run alongside the Plymouth event.

Councillor Glenn Jordan, cabinet member for leisure, culture and sport, said while plans for Armed Forces Day are being kept under wraps for now the city can look forward to spectacular events.

"Details of our national Armed Forces Day celebrations are still being finalised but we can promise a spectacular and exciting programme of entertainment, air and sea displays and activities for the whole family," the former Royal Navy sailor said.

"Plymouth is immensely proud of its long naval and military history, and the courage and dedication of its serving personnel and veterans.

"In addition to our annual Armed Forces Week activities, we are working closely with all our partners to stage a fantastic all-day event that brings people of all ages together to pay tribute to armed forces communities across the UK."

Plans for the Saturday June 30's national Armed Forces Day celebrations are to be announced in due course.
