A former soldier who is walking 6,500 miles in aid of Help for Heroes is currently making his way through North Devon, along the Tarka trail, and is hoping to reach Westward Ho! before nightfall.

Christian Nock left Blackpool on August 9th to begin his epic journey to raise money for injured soldiers. Not only is he walking the entire coastline of England, Scotland and Wales, he is sleeping rough and carrying all his own equipment.

He is relying on the goodwill of people he meets to help him through his mammoth trek which is expected to take 18 months to two years to complete and is the equivalent to walking from John O'Groats to Lands' End seven and half times. He is already on his sixth pair of boots, his third cold and has had just seven days off. He also has a companion in the form of Sebastian, a soft toy hermit crab.

Last night Christian slept in a friend's outhouse near Barnstaple before continuing his journey to Westward Ho! today (November 22). He then plans to take the South West Coast path. He says he has been overwhelmed by people's generosity.

"The experience has restored my faith in humans. I've been offered everything from coffee, to meals and even marriage. People have been brilliant. I've met hundreds of people and made some great friends. This morning a guy from the army surplus store took me for breakfast."

Although the weather hasn't been kind to him, Christian says he's enjoyed his first visit to the area.

"The walk from Minehead to Ilfracombe was really hard going, but the scenery is amazing. I looked across the channel at South Wales and I thought to myself 'I've walked that'."

Christian, who was with the Staffordshire regiment, is hoping to raise £10,000 for Help for Heroes and has already reached £4,500.

“Saw him in Barnstaple Watergate today. Got him a coffee, shook his hand and wished him well.
He has sold everything he owns, and is free of all the cares in the world. He won't take a bed for the night. His plan is to sleep rough all the way round, but he is happy to take a meal or a drink if offered.
Lovely bloke. Quite envied him! He had no idea what day of the week it was!”
