Exeter Chiefs captain Tom Hayes takes training session for Barnstaple under-14s
BARNSTAPLE reached the semi-finals of the Devon Under-14 Plate four days after having a training session with Exeter Chiefs captain Tom Hayes.
The session with Hayes and team-mates Will Chudley and Damian Welch last Wednesday was set up by sponsors RGB.
And their expert advice clearly paid off as Barnstaple won a close quarter-final against Ivybridge on Sunday.
After a scoreless first half, in which the visitors frustrated Barum, two tries were scored for a 12-0 win. Josh Samat's break ended the deadlock, then Noah Stevens sprinted through the defence to score under the posts and Toms Squires converted.
Barnstaple under-13s lost their Devon Plate quarter-final at Stonehouse 19-15.
Martinas Dromantas, Harry Wilson-Palmer and Flynn Elworthy scored tries for Barnstaple.
Bideford under-15s dominated the first half at Tavistock, leading 42-7, before securing a 66-24 win.
Captain Mike Smith scored a hat-trick, Josh Lindo and Reece Pearn crossed twice and there was one try each from man of the match Fraser Priest, Alex Rodgers and Harry Jones. Billy Cockwill kicked six conversions and Pearn two.
Excellent handling took Barnstaple under-12s to a 45-7 win at Tiverton.
The game was close in the forwards but Barum used their possession to greater effect.
Dylan Gosling scored a hat-trick of tries, while Jack Wilkinson, Casey George, Jon Bond and Isaac Windley also crossed.
Barnstaple under-11s scored 12 tries in an 80-0 win at Tiverton.
Alex Rowe, Connor Swan (two), Lui Golden Kemp (two), Reid Williams (three) and Troy Elworthy scored tries, while Jamie McLagan finished with 27 points from three tries and six conversions. Kemp added four conversions.
Ben Rowell scored three times in an eight-tries-to-six defeat for Barnstaple under-10s against Tiverton.
Henry Huxtable, Ben Ryan and Ellis Rees also crossed for Barum.
