Exeter University fresher student William Maskell dies in first week of term
A university student has died just days after starting his course.
William Maskell, who was in his first year at the University of Exeter, was taken ill on the evening of September 26.
The 25-year-old, from the South East, was taken by ambulance to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital near the city centre where he was later pronounced dead.
The university spokesman said: "We are very sorry to have to report the death of one of our students.
"The university has been in touch with his family to offer our deepest condolences and support."This is deeply tragic and sad news and our thoughts are with William's family and friends.
"It is important that the people who knew him, and were involved in helping him, are supported during this difficult time."
Mr Maskell was studying in the College of Life and Environmental Sciences, and lived in the Birks Grange halls of residence on New North Road.
A Students' Guild spokesman said: "We are deeply saddened to hear of William's death and offer our heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends."
"The Students' Guild support services are working closely with those of the University to ensure that students receive the support they need at this very difficult time."
Members of staff from the university's chaplaincy team and wellbeing services have also been made available to speak with those in need of support.
