Exmoor's 1,000-year-old clapper bridge re-built after floods
The oldest bridge in the Westcountry – Tarr Steps on Exmoor – was today being put back together after storms washed away several of the giant two ton stones in the floods of last year.
Engineers retrieved parts of the 1,000-year-old crossing from downstream on the river Barle and begin putting them back in place, to reconnect both sides of the river via the 180ft long clapper bridge.
A 10ft wall of flood water caused most of the damage on December 22. Engineers moved on to the site on Tuesday morning to begin the process of lifting the two-tonne slabs out of the water with heavy lifting machinery.
