FOOD REVIEW: Seagate in Appledore
Iam thinking of giving up food reviews in favour of appraising lavatories. We might call them public conveniences but so very often they are anything but convenient. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has struggled to hold my handbag and trouser leg out of a puddle while reaching for the paper which, horror of horrors, isn't there. There isn't enough room to swing a mouse, I'm about to pass out from the stench, the light's gone out and I am quite sure I just heard something scuttle across the floor.
To top it all, there's no soap to help to sanitise the whole experience from my hands – not to mention mind.
I am so very pleased to tell you there are no such traumas at The Seagate in Appledore. The ladies loo – I can't speak for the gents – can only be described as a super duper, posh powder room with swanky square basins, funky mirrors and wonderful wallpaper, which at first glance looks like a flower pattern, but is actually more like shrimps. As rest rooms go, it's a spotless girly haven.
In fact, the whole bar and spacious dining area has been wonderfully refurbished and is a very smart place to visit if you are eating out with friends. It's very tastefully done.
If you sit outside on the terrace, you can enjoy watching the world go by while enjoying views over to Instow.
From the menu we tried a Cioppino, the Seagate's own take on the San Franciscan Italian Fish Stew (a mildly spicy tomato dish), a nice smoked gammon with peaches flamed in Tennessee Bourbon (we liked the crispy chunky chips with this), a salmon salad (we requested a little more cooking on the fish) and a plain halloumi cheese salad.
The salad eaters found themselves in need of a carb injection and decided to order some sides to turn these light dishes into more of a main meal.
A good choice of puddings saw us get a suitable sugar rush from a key lime pie, a big apple pie, a frozen yoghurt and a pecan pie. All sweet treats slipped down well with no complaints.
As settings go the Seagate is in a prime spot and, even on a Monday night, was popular. If you visit, don't forget to check out that powder room, girls.
