Family's heartbreak at Torquay horror road crash

A grandmother has spoken of her heartbreak over the horrific crash in Devon that killed her two-year-old grandson and left her son and daughter-in-law fighting for their lives.

Oisin Twomey died in the high-speed, head-on crash on Friday which has left his father Con, 39, and mother Elber, 36, critically ill in hospital. The family, from County Cork in Ireland, were expecting a second child which also died following an emergency caesarean operation at the weekend.

Devon and Cornwall Police are investigating whether the driver of the other vehicle deliberately crashed into the family's car to take his own life.

Con Twomey's mother, Julia, said: "We need all the prayers we can get. We are hoping and praying that they will pull through.

"Everyone has been so good – the support has been incredible. But our hearts are still broken."

Mrs Twomey broke down as she spoke of Oisin who was described as "an adorable" little boy.

She said the support of the two extended families – and their wonderful neighbours and friends – was keeping them going.

"We would like to say thanks for the wonderful care Con and Elber have received from the emergency services in the UK," she added. "Our neighbours and extended family here at home have also been so, so good."

A Polish man, in his 20s and living in Torquay, was arrested at the scene of the crash on Hamelin Way on suspicion of murder but died of his injuries in hospital. It has emerged that concerns had been raised with police that he may have been suicidal, and his vehicle's details had been issued to officers.

A police car passed the Polish driver heading in the opposite direction and was turning to follow him when he was seen to swerve into the oncoming traffic. The crash is being investigated by the force's major crime investigation team and serious collision investigation unit.

Although the Polish driver was not being pursued at the time of the crash, the force has referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
