Fears over driver's dangerous U-turns because of new Cowick Street exit
THERE have been several reported near-misses in Cowick Street since the new exit was created from the Exe Bridges Retail Park into Cowick Street.
The reason has been illegal U-turns by drivers – and the problem, more than 18 months after the new exit was created, is continuing.
Cllr Heather Morris has received a further complaint from a resident living in Cowick who witnessed drivers making the unlawful U- turn. Cllr Morris has already raised this with Devon County Council and had asked for clear signage indicating that the exit should be left turn only.
Cllr Morris now says: “Whilst the problem is no longer the signage, drivers are continuing to make U turns which are dangerous.

“I have reported this matter once again to Devon highways asking if this could be looked at. Previously the signage hasn’t been clear and drivers have been confused as to whether they can turn left and then immediately right. “However, whilst the signage is now very clear a minority of drivers continue to disregard the sign and the only solution I can see is for the island to be extended making it impossible for drivers to turn left and immediately right.
“I will be discussing this with my colleagues that sit on Exeter’s highways committee.”
