Female farmers' strong showings at competitions

Sponsorship support meant Honiton Young Farmers' Club could buy six new trophies, run extra classes and increase prize money for its second Annual Show and Sale of Dairy, Beef and Sheep, which was held at Sedgemoor Auction Centre.

It was the club's biggest event of the year, with 28 members showing 66 lots of stock.

A strong bulling heifer class with 13 entries was won by Jenna Rosewell and her heifer Walkabout Slowcoach 38. Rebecca Bartlett won the milking heifer class. Sister Nicola came away with reserve champion and best presented.

The Beef Bullock class was the largest of the day with 18 entries. Champion Linda Pidsley and her Blue, Monty, beat off strong competition. Katie Maynard won the award for Best Presented Stockman. Linda won the Hawkins Cup for Best Presented.

The Beef Calf class was won by Kate Hopkins, who received the Michael Pidsley Shield.

Sheep judges Brian Clothier and Mark Snell had eight lots of couples to pick between. Both the West Devon Meat Cup for Best Pen of Lambs and the Alan Derrymen Shield for Best Pen of Ewes and Lambs were won by Nicola Bartlett, who also picked up the Honiton YFC Best Double in Show. Matt Tidball won the Yard Farm Shield. Best single in the show was won by Matt Dymond. Sarah Pidsley went away with the Honiton YFC Best Triple in Show.

Two new classes and trophies this year were for Champion Beef and Champion Dairy Handler in Show. Nicky Bishop won the Dairy and Linda Pidsley won the Beef, Linda also won the Martin Cup for Most Points in the show, with 29 points, closely followed by Nicola Bartlett with 27 points.
