Festive fun: Barnstaple Christmas Events Guide 2012
Christmas is fast approaching and there is plenty going on in and around Barnstaple to get you in the festive spirit.
Barnstaple prepares to welcome soul diva Beverley Knight this Thursday (November 23) as she drops by to switch on the town's Christmas Lights and perform at Barnstaple's Town Square. Ms Knight tops a bill of musical entertainment starting at 4.00pm. For a full listing of events and timings, click HERE.
Barnstaple Town Council is hosting its Christmas Fayre and Carol Service on Thursday, December 6, starting at 6.30pm in Barnstaple's Pannier Market. This year, comedy duo Jones and Barnard will perform acrobatics, musical theatre and amazing stunts across two sessions (6.30pm and 7.45pm). There will be fun and entertainment for all ages, with the event encompassing the Council's Annual Carol Service. Father Christmas will be taking time out of his busy schedule to make an appearance and there will be crafts and seasonal goods on sale at the Christmas Fayre from 6.30pm until 8.30pm. Barnstaple's Concert Band will provide the music for the carol singing, which will be led by the Town Council and a number of local choir groups.

Petroc's Brannams Campus is opening its doors on Saturday December 8, for a festive day of arts, crafts and entertainment. Events begin with an Arts and Crafts Fair, which will be open to the public from 11am to 4pm. Admission is free. A wide variety of handmade goods will be on sale, including bags and jewellery, by 25 reputable local artists such as Marion Bevis, Ivan Pollard, Marilyn Pollard and Claire Johns. The fair runs alongside a ceramics exhibition in the Goodwin Gallery and also a Christmas Grotto in the Brannams Theatre, specially designed and built by the College's theatre students, who will also be giving entertaining performances throughout the day.

Tarka Gymnastic Club will be holding their Christmas Fayre and Open Day on Saturday, December 1 from 3.00pm to 6.00pm, followed by Family Bingo starting at 7.00pm. The event promises Santa's Grotto, fun and games, face painting, lots of gifts and craft stalls, traditional tea room. There are even a few Superheroes hanging around for the afternoon! Not one, but at least 40 highly-decorated Christmas trees will be on show at St Peter's Church in Fremington, as part of their fantastic annual Christmas Tree Festival. The Festival opens on Friday, December 7 at 3.30pm until 8pm. The Community Christmas Tree on Fremington Green will be switched on at 6.30pm followed by festive music and carols from the Appledore Band. The event is free, but donations are very welcome. You can also see the trees on Saturday from 11am until 6pm and Sunday from 2pm with the festival closing at 5pm, with carol singing.
A little further afield, South Molton has pulled out all the stops to put on a fantastic Winter Wonderland weekend (December 7-9). South Molton's Christmas Tree Festival will be the first of the weekend's events to open its doors. Organisations, schools and businesses from the town have been invited to decorate a Christmas tree to reflect their group, and all entries will be on show in St Mary Magdalene's church from December 6 to December 10, from 10.00am until 4.00pm each day, except on Friday 7 December, when it remain open until 9.00pm. The Winter Wonderland section of the Christmas Festival weekend happens on Friday 7 December, with a seasonal Pannier Market, Late Night Shopping and Lantern Parade. The Lantern parade, led by the rousing rhythms of Samba Soul, will start from the Infant School and snake its way into the Square. Here South Molton Town Band will play carols, accompanied by the Choral Society. The Pannier Market will be full of seasonal goodies to eat, drink and buy as well as the always popular Santa's Grotto.
On Saturday (Dec 8) and Sunday (Dec 9) the Vintage Fair graces the elegant Assembly Rooms. This will be a treasure trove of pretty collectables for the home and garden and full of gorgeous period items to wear and buy as Christmas gifts.
Also on Saturday, fun fair rides for all ages will be half price in the afternoon, on presentation of a special voucher. These can be requested from email@example.com and will be available at various outlets in South Molton from early November.
Sunday 9 December brings one of the highlights of South Molton's agricultural calendar – The Christmas Fatstock Show. With a variety of farm animals to view and buy in the auction, there will also be competitions, trade stands and demonstrations of traditional crafts. This year the Christmas Fatstock Show has Youth as its main theme, with the Young Farmers organisations having a greater input, and even more classes overall. The ever-popular South Molton Vintage Rally will, once again be displaying a wide range of predominantly agricultural vehicles as part of the Show.
