Firefighters were called out to assist a horse which had got trapped in a 4ft-deep ditch full of water.

The crews were alerted at 9.20am yesterday to the drama at Berrow, in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset.

The horse's owner had dialled 999 after the animal was unable to get out.

One fire appliance from Burnham and the special rescue team from Bridgwater attended, as well as a vet who was able to sedate the horse.

They then used strops, lines and a Land Rover to winch the horse to safety.
