Special Rescue crews and a fire appliance from Barnstaple together with a fire crew from Braunton were called to the scene at 9:45am wearing water tight suits.

Firefighters attempted to reach the pair using their own Land Rover vehicle.

Unfortunately the water proved too deep for the four-wheel drive vehicle and they launched a small boat.

Both people were rescued and did not suffer any injuries, say police.

The area continues to suffer from a night of torrential rain with roads in the area impassable and reports of cars getting stuck.

The council are setting up closure signs in the area.
