Former Cullompton star Izzy Noel-Smith scored a try on her Six Nations debut as England women beat Scotland 47-0 on Sunday.

The 23-year-old started the opening game of this season’s tournament on the bench but went on and rounded off the scoring with England’s ninth try.

Noel-Smith won her first cap earlier this season in a friendly in France but was delighted to get called up for a competitive fixture for the defending Six Nations champions.

“It was really exciting to be named in the squad but it hadn’t sunk in that this was a Six Nations game until our training camp,” said Noel-Smith. “We did our game analysis on the Scotland team from last year and it was when the coaches were talking to us that I suddenly realised this was the Six Nations. It’s a big thing and I’m really pleased to be part of it.”

England, who are looking for a record-breaking seventh consecutive title, travel to Milan to play their second game against Italy on Sunday and host Wales at Twickenham on February 25.

They travel to Paris for a game against France on March 11 and end their campaign against Ireland at Esher on March 17.

Noel-Smith will be hoping for more involvement throughout the campaign as she continues her rise through the ranks.

Since leaving Cullompton in 2007, Noel-Smith played for Bath for two seasons and joined Bristol in 2009 to play in the Premiership.

Having graduated from the national under-19s side to the second-string, she was delighted to win her first cap in the autumn.

“When we found out we had the French tests we didn’t know what team they would take out there,” said Noel-Smith. “It was an amazing experience but the game was played in horrendous conditions – there was thunder and lightning as we ran onto the pitch.

“England haven’t lost many games recently so to lose to them by a point was a bit of an eye-opener.

“The conditions didn’t help but it was valuable experience working towards the World Cup and the next few years.”

Noel-Smith was also part of the England side for the first international sevens tournament in Dubai, when they lost the final against Canada.

Former Bludell’s School pupil Matt Kvesic helped England under-20s open their Six Nations defence with a nine-try 59-3 win against Scotland on Friday evening.

The Worcester flanker played the first 65 minutes at Firhill, Glasgow, as winger Marland Yarde (3), Jack Clifford (2), Charlie Walker (2) and Anthony Watson scored tries to add to a penalty try.

England travel to Italy for their second game this weekend.

Devon under-20s’ home game with Somerset, scheduled to be played at Cullompton’s Stafford Park ground last Sunday, has been re-arranged for this Sunday (2.30).
