Plymouth Argyle boss Carl Fletcher: I will play when I am needed

PLYMOUTH Argyle boss Carl Fletcher has revealed why he is reluctant to include his name in the Pilgrims' line-up.

There have been frequent calls for the experienced Welsh international to join Argyle's fight to escape the relegation scrap in League Two on the park, rather than the sidelines.

But with a stronger Argyle squad than he had earlier in the season, the need for the 31-year-old Welsh international to shore up the Pilgrims' midfield is gradually decreasing.

Fletcher himself, in any case, admits he does not know if he will actually play again this season.

The implication must be that he would, but only if there was a dire shortage of midfielders at Home Park.

At the moment, Fletcher is blessed with a midfield anchored by the vastly experienced Paul Wotton.

Working around the 34-year-old veteran – who made his 400th appearance in an Argyle shirt against Accrington Stanley last Saturday – is the youthful enthusiasm of Ashley Hemmings, Conor Hourihane and Luke Young.

Young has blossomed into an exceptionally hard-working ball winner who is in the first team on merit, while Hemmings can turn any defender in the division inside out when he's on his game.

Hourihane demonstrated last Saturday that he is not only a clever passer of the ball, but that he also knows how to get stuck in.

Currently coming off the bench, among others, is midfielder Simon Walton, while Luke Daley, a substitute in Saturday's win, hammered in Argyle's fourth goal close to the end of the game.

At present, Fletcher probably doesn't feel the need to put himself on the park, despite a distinguished career which included clubs such as West Ham and Bournemouth.

His last appearance in an Argyle player's shirt came 21 days after his full-time appointment as player-manager, on November 22 in a 2-0 FA Cup defeat by non-leaguers Stourbridge.

Fletcher, when asked if he would be playing again this season, said: "I don't know."

He joked: "I get out of breath playing with the kids at home and don't know if I'd last 90 minutes."

Fletcher added: "In terms of the squad we've got, we're pretty strong.

"I find it easier to be off the pitch. If you're player-manager, you are trying to focus on two things.

"There is so much pressure being a player and there is so much being a manager that it's hard to do both – and it's going to make me grumpier than I usually am.

"But if we feel the need, then we'll do it."

“Carl Fletcher would serve Plymouth Argyle better playing on the pitch rather than being a rookie manager. To have appointed him as manager in the first place was utter folly by Mr Brent and it obvious he has neither the experience nor contacts to succeed, why else would he need a mentor. It is belief my on the few occasions that Plymouth Argyle has excelled on the pitch it has been more likely that Driscol or Deehan have had control of the tiller selecting both the team and tactics.
Carl Fletcher should put his personal ambitions aside and move over to allow Deehan to take charge for the rest of the season to give Plymouth Argyle a better chance of retaining its league status.

“It is obvious that Fletcher has a long term plan that serves both himself and the club. To that end he is taking a gamble that Argyle will stay up this season, then in 1 or 2 seasons time he will take us up a division. Like many players/managers before him he needs success for the club in order to progress his own career, this is the nature of football. To this end he needs to learn the skills of man managing a team. Remember in the modern game it is not just the manager but also his personal supporting staff, to this end RL is important to Fletcher. When the manager goes also his own coaching team go with him. For his own career prospects he cannot do both, play and manage. If he is successful we will be lucky to have him managing Argyle for 3 seasons, given his relative youth he will be poached away by a bigger team.
Given where we were when Reid left Fletcher has put us on the right track, his choice of transfers has been balanced between youth and experience. Please remember we still do not have a large pile of cash. I remain optimistic over the future as I believe Fletcher has a club/personal plan and that is better than no plan.”

“We fans could keep living in a time warp and just remembering the past, but Carl Fletcher, Argyle and the team have moved on, if the trend set in the last 6 games can be maintained for the remainder of this term, then "The Argyle" will have survived; the early season problems forgotten and we fans all being happy bunnies.

Fletcher and Ro are building a team for survival this term, the primary aim of the board and the fans, whilst at the same time looking to the future. Judging by his (Fletch) attitude so far, he wants to be successful and with that success comes a better future for Argyle, but how far can or will he take us? I for one think back to the Championship, provided he gets the right support and full backing of the board; but it is a long way off at the moment.

As for the team, it is possibly the best balanced side we have had for awhile; there are various combinations at all 3 elements of the side (defence, midfield and forwards) with good back-up in each position. There is now a better representation of youth and experience, with some good youngster emerging from the apprentices - that in itself breeds a certain amount of loyalty and maybe, just maybe this time around we can keep them and not be forced to sell.

Analysing our midfield options, Walton has come up with the goods this term, although I think he may move on at the end of the season purely through financial constrains, to balance the books and to maintain a fairer pay structure for all players. Wotton has returned and looks a better player for his travels, he left as a Captain and returned a General, just hope he can maintain his form throughout the term; although I find it difficult seeing him and Walton in the same team, both good leaders but no legs; which is why Conor Hourihane could be such a big influence, bringing a lot of energy and flare to the park - he is a virtual definite for the now and future. To give width to the team we have Hemmings, Young and Daley, the latter 2 being ours; these 3 young men are all capable of weaving a bit of magic and being match winners, either by scoring or set-up others for the strike.

Yes! we will survive to fight another day, but the party won't over next term because Fletch and Ro will have to continue the rebuild, by finding replacements for the loanees we loose and any player who decides to move on.

Finally, I hope Fletcher can keep solely to his management role and not have to play again, not that I do not like watching him on the park, but it will mean we are doing alright without him.

COYGs, with a brighter looking future your support is essential, the team needs you.”

“It's a little easier to accept with the current set of players and improving results but where was CF when we needed him before Christmas and during the transfer window? I find it hard to believe his presence on the pitch would not have secured an extra point or two which might just make the difference come May. I'm sure we all understand how difficult it is to do two jobs but greater delegation to RL is required. I sincerely wish him well but I hope he is maintaining his fitness because we might surely need him over the next few weeks. COYG”

“I applaud the author of this article for doing his best to put the midfield in a good light. After all, there are enough detractors queuing up to put Argyle down. But the fact is, that for all the brave efforts of Wotton, Young, Walton etc., none of them played 36 times for their country. There are many Argyle fans who will still need to hear a more convincing argument before they accept that Carl Fletcher better serves the team on the sidelines and not on the pitch.”
