Foley relishing Yeovil's promotion push after switch from non-League

Yeovil Town's players would have been in the wrong profession had they not secretly believed they were capable of pushing for promotion according to Sam Foley.

The Glovers have developed from unlikely npower League One play-off contenders to top two hopefuls following a stunning start to 2013.

They travel to Hartlepool United today boasting nine wins from the last 11 outings, including last weekend's 1-0 defeat of promotion rivals Tranmere Rovers just days after a 2-0 defeat away to struggling Colchester United.

Wide man Foley admitted he could not have anticipated scaling such heady heights so soon after his summer switch from non-League Newport County but said the Glovers were confident of continuing to prove people wrong.

"There is always something in the back of your mind that you want to achieve big things but nobody is going to come out and hold their hands up and say at the beginning of the season that you think you're going to at the top," he said.

"It was going to be a dream for us to be up there. But if you are not thinking those things you're in the wrong game, really.

"We have proved a lot of people wrong. At the start of the season people thought we were a small club and wouldn't do well but we have shown ability-wise that we can mix it physically and mentally."

The 26-year-old has quickly become one of manager Gary Johnson's first names on the team-sheet since his arrival at Huish Park, scoring six goals in 39 appearances, mainly on the left wing.

Foley said: "It's great to play. You can only take one game at a time and to come in and play as regularly as I have is a surprise, but I have taken my opportunity with both hands.

"It's not just me: Kevin Dawson has done the same, as well as other players. It's not really down to what you have done, it's down to what you did the week before and what you can do in the week leading up to the game. That's what matters to the manager.

"It's brilliant here, I've loved every minute. The atmosphere we get is good considering it's a small stadium.

"You play at the likes of Sheffield United with lots of fans but the fans get right behind you here.

"The boys really appreciate it, it's almost like having that 12th man that has helped us get where we are."

Even though the Glovers could potentially create club history this season, Foley said that the squad was remaining grounded.

"It [promotion] is there in our foremost thoughts and with each win it solidifies our position in the play-offs. Anything else we can get is a bonus.

"Promotion is realistic and if we can get into the play-offs there is no reason why we cannot kick on from that. If we are even better than the play-offs then we have earned it."

On coping with the pressure brought by Yeovil's lofty position, Foley added: "We have got to be able to deal with it.

"We have gone into most games as underdogs, even on our eight-game winning run. Now we have got to where people are looking at us, thinking we should be winning games.

"That's a great place for the lads to be but if we can just go into games looking at the information in front of us and apply ourselves to the game we know we should come out on top."
