Forget library, build a pool
THE Mid Devon/Cullompton council soap opera continues.
In the real world meanwhile, the BBC National News tells us that it is anticipated between 800 and 1,000 libraries will be closing throughout the UK.
Over the past decade there has been a six per cent downsizing of book stocks, 16 per cent reduction in borrowing and 32 per cent less usage of libraries.
Pilot schemes are already operating with "libraries" in pubs and other voluntarily manned establishments.
These innovations are being promoted as the future service, but our local "retro politicos" want to spend £3million of our money on a mid 20th century edifice — that is if they can find modern day materials to disguise the mistake.
How about a swimming pool instead? Has that not been a major plea from the populace for yonks, and didn't the good folks of Cullompton collect a tidy sum decades ago for this purpose?
