THE mother of a teenage girl who has been to school just twice since September has been fined £400 for failing to make her daughter attend school, and failed to attend court for her own case.

Janet Roberts, 49, of 58 Home Farm Road, Fremington, was given the fine at North Devon Magistrates' Court despite failing to attend.

James Champion, for the prosecution, proved the case in Roberts' absence, saying how her 14-year-old daughter, a pupil at Pilton Community College, had a 16 per cent attendance rate between May 1 and July 18 this year.

Roberts then failed to attend a meeting at the school to discuss her daughter's absences.

Her daughter has not attended the school since the first two days of the 2012-13 academic year. Mr Champion said there had been no indication of any reasons for the absences.

As well as the £400 fine Roberts was ordered to pay £50 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
