A £250,000 donation has been made to refurbish the medical ward at West Cornwall Hospital kept closed over the winter by the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust.

The League of Friends for West Cornwall Hospital – who are dedicated to raising money to improve facilities and conditions at the Penzance hospital – say they were disappointed by the closure that saw winter flu care focused at Treliske.

But now they say they want something good to come of the closure and have donated the money to renovate the ward – a job health chiefs say they would have had to fund themselves sometime in the next 12 months.

Now the ward will be completely refurbished while it is shut – although RCHT say the work may lead to a delay in the reopening the ward.

Gill Prodger, secretary of the League of Friends, said: "Disappointed at the temporary closure of Medical Ward 2, the League of Friends decided that something positive should result.

"The patients will benefit from the high standard of the new fixtures, fittings and surroundings which will make their stay more pleasant, and the RCHT will have reduced maintenance costs for many years to come."

The League of Friends believe recent investment announced by RCHT at the St Claire site proves health chiefs are committed to the hospital's future.

Ms Prodger said: "Recent investment by RCHT has seen the opening of the new treatment centre which has provided a considerable increase in the clinics and treatments now available.

"More equipment has been, and will be purchased by the League of Friends to supplement these facilities."

“We'd better get used to it. The only place funds for the NHS will come from shortly is charities like this one.
After all it was only a few years ago that Oliver Letwin promised Tory cronies that the "NHS will not exist" within five years of a Conservative election victory. It seems to be coming true. http://tinyurl.com/czpcfh5
