Funding pitch by eco-inspired apparel brand
A Falmouth University graduate is bidding to launch a sustainable sports and lifestyle brand, with a £3,500 pitch on crowdfunding website Indiegogo.
Topsham-based Kimberley Martinez aims to raise the finance to back her fashion label, Embark, which will make clothes and accessories using eco-friendly and natural materials such as bamboo, organic cotton and cork.
Ms Martinez, who has a degree in 3D design, has based her pitch around an initial product, the Longshore wristwatch, which is made from bamboo.
Indiegogo raises revenue for start ups by offering their products or perks to investors at a discount rate. To entice bidders, the first 35 Embark wristwatches will be sold at around half of their eventual retail price.
Ms Martinez has spent eight months taking Embark through the product design and development phase and registering as a limited company.
She has drawn on the support of local business mentors and the Prince's Trust, as well as benefiting from the New Enterprise Allowance, a Government scheme aimed at helping people on Jobseeker's Allowance start their own businesses.
She said: "I have always had an interest in sustainability and I really wanted to create a brand which was very modern."
