A BOY racer took two teenaged girls on a terror ride in which he sped through red lights as he tried to show off to them.

Stephen Lyon, 21, sped along a single-track road with his 16-year-old girlfriend beside him in the front seat of his car and a 17-year-old in the back.

The older girl was so terrified she texted a friend saying she thought they were going to crash and within seconds her prediction came true, Exeter Crown Court was told.

Both girls were injured after Lyons lost control of his Ford Focus and it smashed into a lorry before rebounding into the middle of a roundabout.

Lyon had driven into Exeter from Crediton. He dropped off two male passengers and then took the two girls to the Marsh Barton trading estate where he raced around the streets, crashing on the Trusham Road roundabout.

His girlfriend had screamed at him to slow down and 'stop being an idiot' and had shut her eyes as he sped around the estate at speeds of up to 60mph.

Lyon, of Waie Cottages, Zeal Monachorum, near Crediton, admitted dangerous driving and was jailed for six months, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work and pay £340 costs. He was banned from driving for two years.

Recorder John Williams said: "It was a complete mercy no-one died or was paralysed, disfigured or their lives completely destroyed. I am not sure I am doing the right thing by the public (by suspending the jail sentence)."

Lee Bremridge said Lyon had been "showing off."
