God of love?
Following recent correspondence in these letter pages I address this letter to Christians, not unbelievers.
Jesus did talk about the "love of God"; but he also talked about "Judgement" and "Hell": You can't cherry-pick the Bible to find the bits you like. The book of Acts in the Bible talks the most about the spread of the Christian message to the world; yet it doesn't mention the word "love" once.
Jesus did talk about "love"; but only to his followers, never to unbelievers.
To hear about God's love in a corrupt world that is full of suffering simply doesn't make sense to non-believers; which is why it wasn't preached to them in the Bible.

It is only after someone has been "born again" and saved from the penalty, power and captivity of sin that they can receive God's love through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5).
In the 1960s the Bible's Gospel message of "repentance of sin" and having a right relationship with God ("righteousness") was replaced by many with the man made gospel of "God's unconditional love". This was possibly to compete with the "love" movement of the hippies, but whilst most people have heard of this Christian message, no-one has yet shown me any Biblical evidence for it.
For those Christians who are thinking of John 3:16 then may I respectfully recommend a short book by the respected Bible teacher David Pawson entitled "Is John 3:16 the Gospel?"
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom but my fear is that we have turned the God of the Bible into a God of our imagination; a sentimental God who wouldn't hurt a fly."
