CLUB vice-captain Martin Selby and Neil Carthew moved into the last eight of the men's winter foursomes after knocking out Dominic Bristow and Neil Megarry in the second round.

The quarter-final line-up is now complete, with Selby and Carthew set to take on Andy Brice and Richard Colman.

In other ties, Rob Hagley and Peter Pickard will meet Mark Dakin and Chem Austin, Nick Lear and Steve Lucas will face Kim Garnsworthy and Pete Guest, while Rhys and Ricky Cruse will do battle with Andy Bolt and Derek Cruwys.

Club captain Peter Garnsworthy won 74 golf balls after being the only player to record a two in the four-man team event on Saturday, chipping in for a birdie on the 14th.

The competition was won by Paul Bowler, Mark Sangster, Mike Cottrell and Russell Jarman with 80 stableford points.

Andy Hill, Paul Mitchell, Mark Reeves and Peter Boax (79) claimed second place ahead of Bill Tobin, Steve Hayes, David Jack and Mark Davitt (78).

Simon Budden, Lloyd Sampson, Alby Cruse and Simon Mosley posted 87 stableford points to win the four-man team event the previous week.

Roy Ireland, John Webber-Rookes, Dave Buxton and Russell Jarman were second on 86, beating Heath Ellis, Mark Sangster, Andy Bolt and Paul Mitchell on a countback.

Marian Stevens and Chris Williams carded 22 stableford points to win the ladies' 11-hole greensomes competition on Wednesday. Ivy Radford and Maggie Knowlman (21) took second place ahead of Kathryn Hall and Rosemary Venner (19), Julia Cole and Jean Granger (19) and Kay Leach and Chris Norton (16).

Marking the changeover of Captains, a Texas scramble team event was followed by the captains' drive-in on the 18th green. Terry Harris, Helen Hughes, Andy Neilson and Kelly Hughes won it, scoring 51.3.

Tuesday's competition was played as a club par matchplay against the course format, with only three temporary greens in play due to the freezing conditions.

Steve Ebdon won the competition with +8, beating Nigel Hoskins on countback. Graham Bulford finished third on +5, whilst Harry Coleman was fourth, beating the course by four holes.

Saturday's monthly medal was played on 18 temporary greens due to freezing conditions.

Ken Greedy carded a nett 56 to take first place in division two, with Geoff Baker next with 57, ahead of Steve Taylor in third with 59.

Steve Ebdon won division one with a nett 59, three ahead of Steve Burchell and Andy Vickery who finished second and third respectively on 62.

Lady captain Anne Woodger tops the table in the Wednesday ladies nine-hole winter league with 27 points.

Pat Greenfield finds herself just three points behind on 24 with Chris Wood a further four points off the pace.

Michelle Underwood looks like running away with the Saturday event having accumulated 26 points and an eight-point lead. Anne Woodger is back in second with 18 points, ahead of Ann Hazelwood on 14.

Downes Crediton

Tony Smale, Alan Draper and Cyril Dawes won the captain's drive-in on countback after four teams all scored 80 points.

Keith Ford, Paul Gidley and Mike Napper were second, club president Alan Ruddock, chairman Paul Fricker and professional Barry Austin were third, and fourth place went to Keith Ware, Alan Dransfield and Ollie Greenslade.

After the golf, the 2012 captains drove into office. Ladies' captain Fran Shrubsole, junior captain Luke Ebdon and seniors' captain Phil Ollis were followed by club captain Chet Greenslade.

While the seniors' team event on Monday fell foul of the weather, the ladies played a stableford on Thursday.

Betty Willey won with 36 points, one ahead of new vice-captain Sylvia Marklew, with Doreen Warren a further shot behind in third.

Cary Rawlings fired an eagle and a birdie in the last four holes to win the January stableford.

He scored 34 points to take the title on countback from Paul Knight in second and Tom Evans in third.

Padbrook have been handed a bye in the first round of the Daily Mail Foursomes event.

The qualifying tournament, which was due to select the two players to represent the club, has been postponed for a week due to the poor weather.

Sunday's Texas scramble was cast as a fun game to break up the pressure of the Winter League games.

This week's inspired threesome were Mark Fowler, Eric Short and Richard Reece who beat the rest of the field with a nett 59.1.

A close second were Sid Martin, Mike Godfrey and Richard Beard with 61.4, leaving Phil Wall, Max Pipe and Andy Sharland, 62.1 ruing those few missed putts back in third place.

The Warren

The Warren Ladies faced freezing conditions on Thursday to play an eighteen-hole American greensome competition.

In first place with 39 points was Angela Johnson and Pat Harker, while second with 38 points were Anne Ward and Lesley Turpin.

In third place with 36 points were Jean Halliday and Gina Redman.
