WHEN the families of newlyweds Ben and Emily Hawkes were sorting through pictures of their childhood before their nuptials, they came up with a photograph that took everyone by surprise.

What they had found was a 17-year-old cutting from the Gazette showing the future husband and wife together as winners of a Easter bonnet competition run at the primary school they both attended.

Neither Ben nor Emily had any recollection of the event and were amazed to see the cutting which predated the earliest photos of them together by several years.

The couple, who have been living together in Newton Abbot for the last 18 months, though they have been going out for around a decade, tied the knot on September 1.

Ben's mother Gillian Hawkes said everyone on both sides of the union had been amazed by the discovery of the long-forgotten photograph. She said: "It was not until the last year of secondary school in Uffculme that they really got to know each other and started going out.

"They both grew up in Hemyock, doors away from each other, and they both went to the primary school in Hemyock but neither of them had any memory of being photographed together for the Easter competition."

Under the headline 'Easter Eggstravaganza' the black and white picture shows the two youngsters holding hats which were decorated with daffodils and other floral touches to reflect the Easter scene.

The picture was shown to the couple just before the wedding and Gillian said the bride and groom had been "amazed" to see it.

She added: "Looking at the picture of Emily when she was nine and Ben when he was ten, I think Emily has not changed all that much, Ben has changed more, but I think boys changed more anyway."

Ben is studying to become a primary school teacher and Emily works in the marketing department at Exeter University.

Ben is the oldest of Bob and GIllian's three children, while Emily is the oldest daughter of Claire and David Leach, who are now divorced.

The couple have since returned from a week-long honeymoon in the Italian city of Verona and they also visited Venice.
