Great Western Canal pumps to be lifted by Chinook
A SECOND attempt to lift pumps from a flooded field using a military helicopter is likely to be made today, the Gazette understands.
The huge pumps were placed in a field near Halberton and used to drain a giant lagoon which formed after last week's breach in the Grand Western Canal.
The mission to lift them, using a Chinook helicopter, onto nearby lorries was due to take place yesterday but was called off because of fading light.
The lagoon is now significantly lower after water was pumped one and a half miles away to a secure section of the canal.
