The Herald's 'big glass ship' iconic building goes up for sale
THE Herald and its sister newspaper, the Western Morning News, are moving back into Plymouth city centre.
After 20 years in Derriford, the two newspapers will once again be at the very heart of the city.

The Herald's 'big glass ship' iconic Derriford building goes up for sale
The move, which will happen in the summer, has been made possible after the titles were acquired by a new regional newspaper company, Local World.
Local World took over Northcliffe Media, the regional publishing arm of Daily Mail and General Trust and Iliffe News and Media on December 30 last year.

The new media group, with nearly 100 titles, is transforming regional publishing to create a one-stop shop for local content to serve the community and business in every aspect of life.
The business is building on leading regional media titles like The Herald and the Western Morning News with strong audience loyalty in local communities, and expanding their digital presence with a £10 million investment.
Blanche Sainsbury, managing director of South West Media Group, which publishes The Herald and the Western Morning News, said: "The move back into the city shows our commitment to be at the heart of the community.
"Herald reporters have always had their fingers on the pulse of current events, but this will make their job that much easier."
The newspapers moved out of New George Street in Plymouth city centre when their glass and steel headquarters building opened in 1993.
The "Ship", as it was dubbed, has won five architectural awards.
With the major changes in the publishing industry over the past five years, the building has become too large for the needs of the two newspapers.
The company is now actively marketing the building on the Plymouth International Medical and Technology Park in Derriford.

“I wonder which of the many big empty buildings they will take over - Woollies? The Halifax on Derry's Cross? Derry's? Whichever it is, it will be good to see an empty building being made good use of.”

“When was the last time a "journalist" asked in depth questions from any of our local bigwigs rather than just relay their own personal message for a start ? You go into a shop these days and you get a brain dead moron serving you with no idea except how to use a till. You got newspaper journos turned out from massed produced PC unis who must not ask awkward questions ,but would rather concentrate on such things as the face of Plymouth disco .”

“Yeah right ... got to big for their boots and have to move to a student bedsit more like it . The reporters will feel at home as they have only just left such a place after doing their PC media studies . Perhaps if they had actualy listened to complaints about being to PC and deliver real in depth news stories they would have sold more copies . Its not as if they were not warned by hundreds of us on here over the years .”

“The Herald will continue to have its legendary finger on the pulse of Plymouth for as long as it has an email address for press releases to be dropped into, on their short and generally uninterrupted way to the page.”

“Perhaps they can move the printing back into the city centre as well - be great if they could use the Woolies building - imagine looking at the presses through the windows”

“What bull. "Moving to the city centre will have the reporters on the pulse and their lives made easier".
Are you stating that you are not on the pulse and regret moving to Derriford?
With technology and computers etc, the reporters can keep their finger on the pulse where ever they are. within reason.
Moving to the city centre is not really about the reporters it is mainly about cost. Herald is struggling and needs to sell the building to raise funds and downsize offices.”

“I can remember doing Security there when the Topping out Ceremony was taking place. Lovely veiw from the roof, which of course I just had to get up to. Good luck to whoever purchases it.”
