Holsworthy footballer seriously injured in match at Helston

HOLSWORTHY captain John O'Donoghue is recovering in hospital after suffering a life-threatening injury in a football match on Saturday.

The defender punctured an intestine in a collision with a team-mate during Holsworthy's 11-0 defeat at Helston Athletic in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League.

After help from a member of the Helston club who is a part of the Royal Navy air rescue team, he was taken to Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) and underwent a five-hour operation.

Barry Parrish, the Holsworthy chairman, said: "In all the years I have been in football I have seen some bad injuries but I have never heard of anybody puncturing their intestines.

While he continues his recovery, John is expected to remain in hospital in Truro for four of five days.
