A LARGE store in Barnstaple, which has stood empty for two years, could become a homeware shop.

The former-MFI store in Roundswell is subject to an application lodged last week with the planning authority, North Devon Council, to become a Dunelm Mill store.

The business has applied to create a mezzanine floor with a variation to a condition, so it can sell a wide range of household textiles, various furnishings, kitchenware – and have a café.

Dunelm Mill describes itself as the UK's largest homeware and soft furnishings store. It sells bedding, curtains, blinds and other items.

It has dozens of outlets around the UK and in the south west of England it has shops in Plymouth, Torquay and Taunton.

The MFI shop closed in October 2008 with the loss of seven jobs.

The Dunelm Mill plan will be decided by council officers after a consultation period which ends on January 7.
