Hunting Act should stay
IN attacking the Hunting Act, the people of this constituency should expect more from their new MP, Neil Parish, than a mere repetition of the tired platitude that it is 'bad legislation'. (Gazette 25/5/10)
In what way is it bad, Mr Parish? There have been more than 130 successful prosecutions since 2005. Two members of hunts are before the courts within the next few weeks, one of them for the second time.
A string of cases across the country are with the police and the Crown Prosecution Service.
Is it bad because a minority of people insist on breaking the law? If so, to be consistent, Mr Parish should be calling for the repeal of the Theft Act.
The fact is that live quarry hunting is a cruel and barbaric activity. It has nothing to do with pest control and everything to do with terrorising an animal in order to provide entertainment.
The practice is now illegal. Right-minded people will be disappointed that their new MP dismisses this ground breaking legislation so lightly.
