Hyde Park wincity indoor athletics title
HYDE Park School and debutants Kingsbridge Community College were crowned champions at the Plymouth and West Devon Indoor Athletics Finals held at Marjon.
In the under-11 sports hall event, Hyde Park emphatically prevailed with a whopping total of 430 points.
They will now go forward as city champions for the county finals following their success at this week's 10-school tournament.
Kingsbridge's Year 7 and Year 8 boys and girls, new entries this year, also shone to take the under-13 overall title, amassing a combined total of 561 points.
The girls came second to category winners Stoke Damerel Community College (283pts) with 277 points, while Kingsbridge's (284) boys went one better winning their event from second-placed Devonport High School.
In both age categories, each team of 12 participated in events such as indoor soft javelin, triple jump and long jump in the field, while there were races such as obstacle relay and the six-lap – and in the secondary version, eight-lap – track race.
Lance Chatfield, School Sports Partnership manager said both primary and secondary school events went swimmingly and congratulated pupils and students from all the schools involved for the high level of their athleticism.
"With excellent support from UCP Marjon and its students, along with coaches from various Armada Athletics Forum clubs who officiated, the events went off without a glitch and were amazing to watch and be part of," said Chatfield.
"The level of attainment (in the under-11s) was far greater than in previous years and some were on a par with the under-13s.
"All the teams gave 100 per cent and the noise was beyond fever pitch as they cheered each other on."
Coming second to Hyde Park in the primary tournament, was Old Priory with 358 points, with Elburton finishing third (326) and Lipson Vale a close fourth with 318.
All four of these teams will now go on to represent Plymouth schools at next month's county finals.
The other primary schools involved were Compton, Whitleigh, Lipson Vale, Widewell, Montpelier, Keyham Barton and Victoria Road.
In the Year 7 and Year 8 events, the lead changed hands on several occasions before Kingsbridge claimed top place overall.
