ITV regional news programmes for Devon and Cornwall will be broadcast from Bristol from the spring, it was announced yesterday.

More than 80 jobs will go at ITV Westcountry and ITV West when their operations are merged as part of a nationwide scheme to reduce the broadcaster's costs by £40 million.

This will include the closure of the ITV Westcountry studio at Langage, near Plymouth, and a scaling-down of its news reporting teams across the region.

More than 1,000 jobs will be lost nationwide, including more than 400 in newsrooms.

The move, which was announced to staff across the region yesterday, left many "close to tears", according to National Union of Journalists representative John Andrews, who said some staff felt there had been a "betrayal" of the ideals of ITV regional news.

"It is a very sad day," he added.

"Obviously, we have been braced for the news for a year, but the size of the losses has taken some people by surprise."

Mr Andrews said: "At least we will save some jobs in the region – even if it is not the Westcountry that we know and love."

In total, 84 posts will be lost in the merger of ITV operations across the South West.

Currently, ITV West employs 67 people and ITV Westcountry the equivalent of 89 full-time staff.

The new programmes are likely to start broadcasting from Bristol around the end of February, when the main Westcountry studio at Langage will be closed.

Small teams comprising two reporting staff and a cameraman will be located at places across the Westcountry. Offices at Langage and Cornwall will close and new smaller ones will be created. Other offices in Barnstaple, Exeter and Taunton will stay but with teams of just three people.

There will also be a small "creative" team based in Plymouth.

Coverage of Dorset is likely to shift to ITV's Meridian programme, which covers an area stretching as far as Sussex.

Unions condemned the proposals and warned of possible industrial action to fight the job cuts.

Shadow Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt told the Western Morning News yesterday that the savings outlined by the cuts were a "red herring".

"I think this ITV desire to merge their regional news stations is a huge missed opportunity by the Government to develop a proper strategy for local TV in this country," he said.

"Moving from regional TV that was unsatisfactory to super-regional TV which is even less so is a red herring.

"What we need is proper local TV where you can turn on the TV and see what's happening near you."

He added that there should be a greater push toward ultra-local TV with stations dedicated to areas like Cornwall and cities like Exeter and Plymouth.

"It is one of the biggest gaps in public service broadcasting. I think the real solution here is actually not local TV for Cornwall done miles away.

"I think it would be great if we had Cornwall TV done in Cornwall for people in Cornwall."

John Cresswell, ITV's chief operating officer, said: "We are committed to a self-help, self-funding solution to securing ITV's future. In order to sustain our investment in UK content, we have to keep on top of our cost base."

“Yet again the west country will suffer with cuts to our local news. We should not let this happen and see if we can help keep are ITV news. If ITV cut their service the BBC will be next.”

“What has all this political claptrap got to do with ITV consolidating its new service into Bristol??. Here in the Lost Land we don't get local news anyway. When they announce that " we are going over for your local news " all we get is Plymouth or Exeter. Why don't you political " observers " concentrate on the most important promise that Tony Blair did not fulfill and that was to take away the right of the BBC to pick my pockets and force me to pay for the total rubbish that it churns out day after day. Still, I suppose, their are really a vast amount of brain dead viewers who actually enjoy " Silly ***** prancing!!. Finally, to the PR and Communications expert it's LOSE not loose. kind regards”

“I Think what ITV are planning is so mad and stupid!
ITV have made so many mistakes over the years we been sujected to Phone scandels, the Carlton Cancer take over, then ITV Plc, its a joke, now that ITV want to save money and close ITV for devon and cornwall, because we are not important enough???!!
It also amazes me how ITV can pay Simon Cowell and offer to Pay Sharon Osborne so much money to be on a stupid Reality show that people are getting bored of, yet ITV cannot afford to invest in its regions like ITV Westcountry,

When we all go Digital ITV will fail because ITV is as dull and as bland as every other channel out there and people will rather watch UKTV gold then ITV as at least UK TV Gold show repeats of Classic tv that used to be on ITV!!!!!

If ITV cant be bothered to spend the money for regional ITV in the Far South West then The Region so be allowed to be re Franchised out to a company who is willing to spend the money to invest in Reguionla TV for devon and cornwall, i mean Channel TV is still independent so We should be allowed to go the same way, becuase getting rid of the Plymouth Studios is stupid, and like when ITV got rid of the NEws at Ten they will regreat it in yewars to come and when they come to decide to replace it, it will be too late and people wont care!
so ITV stop think and if you cant invest in ITV Westcountry Let someone else who can!!!!! and the Goverment should step in and tell ITV if they cant offer a reguional serves to ITV Westcountry or ITV Border then it should let these regions up for franchise so some else can!!!!!”

“A sad day for all in the regions. Thoughts are of course with the hard-working and dedicated staff who do not deserve such a fate.

Ofcom has made a major mistake in allowing the demise of regional commercial news, a mainstay of our local culture and identity.

The staff at Westcountry, many of whom worked at TSW before that, are local heroes who live and work in the regions and who bring our area to life every night.”

“I can see the logic regarding all issues of supporting banks. They are needed to run and adjust the ecomy. Regrettably, it's the only issue where I can and do. There were things done wrong under the Thatcher regime and they were punished. However, they were going in the right direction, just the wrong way to do so. However, since 1997 this country has gone to the dogs. We have lost our borders, immigration out of control, open-door policy, pensions plundered and pillaged resulting in many losing dignity in their retirement, tax fiascos, lack of increase in the tax allowances thus increasing tax by huge amounts, no control over utilities thus causing hardships to the elderly, inability to manage care in the community, NHS IT fiascos and extravagent wastage, paying kids to have kids to buy votes, the Foot and mouth Debacle, a PM who sent his Foreign Secretary to Portugal to sign documents affecting this country's future, Compulsory Purchase Orders at low rates only to new build on the land and sale of new properties for massive profits (Prescott's little gem). Not to mention the PC and Human Rights garbage, the inability to resource our lads in Iraq and Afghanistan costing lives into the bargain. Shall I go on - no, you get the picture.”

“I totaly agree with Micheal's comments 100%,the whole of this country has been taken for a rather large ride for far to long, every public service has been destroyed by the march of free market capitalism. Government is no longer accountable to the british people on any level, people need to WAKE UP AND SMELL THE REAL COFFEE and see for themselves the reality of a BIG BUSINESS state rather than Britain plc.”

“It's also about democracy. For democratic decisions to be made about how we are governed locally, we need information and debate.

For ITV to substitute even more game shows and celebrity trash TV for local investment in information and news broadcasting is sad. Yet, it is perhaps not surprising as we are dumbed down and seen as mere consumers.”

Communities and organisations in Devon and Cornwall will loose an excellent publicity tool.

“None of this cost cutting comes as any surprise to me.

Nothing and nobody is safe when the culture of extreme Capitalism reared its ugly head beginning under Margaret Thatcher's era.

    Margaret Thatcher deemed the
role of the state as Socialism, so she was determinded to destroy it at no matter the cost to our Community because Margaret Thatcher did not believe in Community, neither did she believe Society, just individuals.

So she began to remove the role of the state from British life, beginning with the State Pension, moving to the Post Offices 3, 500 were closed during the Tory years 1979-1997.

All this has been embraced by our right wing New Labour Government, and now it's the turn of our local TV stations cost cutting to save money, while those at the top cream off and make a bundle.

Im wondering how long it will take before the British TV media begin to stop their political impartiality in reporting
little protests here, and little protests there, and lead from the front taking the British with them, to get rid of the right wing dictatership we have in this country, that is systematically destroying our communities, from post offices to Community care re- privatisation, and the publically owned ITV media ?.

This Government have recently nationalised two banks at a cost of billions to the British tax payer, which the right wing Tory opposition agree with.

Yet our people are being robbed of vital services to save money.

Can anybody see the irony, and barbarism of this ?
