Ilfracombe bus station to be fenced off from today
ILFRACOMBE'S privately owned bus station is to be fenced off from today.
Omnium Ilfracombe Ltd purchased the station from First Devon and Cornwall Ltd in 2007 but, as First have axed their services in the area, Omnium have decided to fence off the area due to insurance reasons.
Councillor Mike Edmunds said it is regrettable that the bus station has had to be fenced off but that it is the right of the private land owner to do so.
"From Thursday the bus station site will be fenced off completely so there will be no buses going down there.

"We are going to have an emergency bus stop where the taxis are in Fore Street.
"It is unfortunate this has happened but it is the right of the private owner to fence his land off."
At an Executive meeting on Tuesday it was agreed that consultations are to take place to secure land on Ilfracombe's sea front for the provision of a mini-roundabout and additional bus layovers at Brookdale coach park.
Diana Hill, head of technical and property services, said this would have the effect of reducing the number of vehicles entering St James Place and Ropery Road.
She said: "There was an application some years ago at the executive who agreed to transfer land on the sea front that would enable the creation of a roundabout with the objective of reducing the number of vehicles that enter the harbour area.
"The developer did not choose to pursue this and went through a planning application process."
The application was unsuccessful and no further applications have been applied for to carry out works on the bus station.
Therefore the agreement was made by the Executive for Diana Hill to enter negotiations with the Lead Members for Regeneration, for Ilfracombe and for Sport, Leisure and Culture to bring about the necessary changes.

its always been a bus station, never a bloody free residents car park. its pain in the **** inconsiderate i`ll park where ever i like people like you that make life hard for the poor bus drivers every morning.”
