Ilfracombe mum guilty of being drunk and disorderly in Barnstaple Tesco

A YOUNG mother from Ilfracombe has pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in a supermarket after being escorted to court by police.

Maddison-Jo Hattle, 21, of Flat 5, 155 High Street, Ilfracombe, was taken to North Devon Magistrates' Court on Friday morning after she failed to attend an earlier hearing on November 9 last year.

Lyndsey Baker, for the prosecution, told the court police had been called to Tesco in Barnstaple on October 16 at around 8pm, because "two drunks were upsetting customers".

"They were directed to the alcohol aisle where a male and female were unsteady on their feet and smelt of alcohol," she said.

After being told they would not be served Hattle and her partner became abusive and the man was arrested.

"The defendant started shouting at officers and was warned she would be arrested if she carried on," said Miss Baker.

While being placed in handcuffs Hattle struggled and fell to the floor.

Hattle, defending herself, said: "I wasn't actually that drunk and they let me out after two hours. I was just worried about my boyfriend."

She also explained how she had missed her court hearing because it had clashed with family proceedings in Somerset, where she was involved in a custody battle.

She also said she had tried to come to court a few days afterwards, in November, but had been stopped by snow.

Presiding magistrate Terry Robins fined Hattle £50 for being drunk and disorderly and £20 for breaching her bail as well as ordering her to pay a £15 victim surcharge.
